Fabulous Feature Walls

When you think of a feature wall, what springs to mind? Chances are, it’s probably a bright, painted wall in a vibrant colour adjacent to three neutral ones. This has become a go-to interior design technique, but hasn’t it become a bit predictable? The idea of a feature wall is to create something unexpected and exciting that demands attention and draws the eye.
Whilst using paint to create a feature can look great, the final result can sometimes lack texture and depth. This is where tiles come in. The humble feature wall doesn’t have to be lacklustre and uninspiring when there is such a vast array of tile options out there, suitable for use anywhere in the home.
A huge amount of tile materials are available (refer to our Tile Files series which has so far covered ceramic and glass) with an almost endless supply of effects that can be applied to each to create truly individual effects. So where do you start?
Patterned and patchwork tiles have seen a huge surge in popularity this year, with no sign of abating any time soon. Particularly in favour are designs inspired by foreign lands, with Moorish influences seeing real prominence. Patterned tiles are perfect for adding unexpected style, and are available in a wide range of colours to suit. Now’s your chance to use the colour you love but haven’t been quite sure about incorporating, such as this sunny Summer Yellow. Coupled with grey the look is softened, but still eye catching.
If you’re nervous, start by installed a bright splashback or patchwork tiles behind a sink or basin – practical and stylish, this should slowly ease you in.
Beautiful glossy glass tiles should not be overlooked. The reflective surface is easy to clean and reflective so light will bounce around the room. Many different materials can be encased in glass tiles, from real gold to glitter, and an almost endless number of effects can be created including wrought iron.
Arguably the king of features walls, mosaics look beautiful wherever they are installed. Whether you want a rainbow of hues, glimmers of gold or a rustic tumbled finish, there’s something to suit.
With a feature wall, don’t play it safe. Take this opportunity to experiment with different colours and effects - you might be surprised by the result.
