What material should you choose?

The enduring popularity of tiles can be put down to many reasons, from good looks to practicality and versatility - though the vastness in the range of styles and materials available certainly plays a part. In this series we’ll take a look at the range of materials on offer and the benefits associated with each.

Materials such as ceramic, natural stone, glass, metal, porcelain and even wood can be used to create tiles and mosaic tiles, all but guaranteeing that the perfect product for any space is out there. This has also helped tiles evolve from a kitchen or bathroom item to something that looks beautiful in any area of the home including living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and even the garden!

With this in mind, it’s still important that you choose the appropriate material for your environment. Some tiles may not be suitable for certain areas and others will require more maintenance.

Ceramic
One of the most popular materials for the manufacture of tiles, ceramic is ideal for just about anywhere in the home. The Odyssey range is a good example of versatility. Odyssey ceramic tiles are suitable for use all over the home, including the garden - they are even frost resistant provided they are laid correctly.

Once installed and treated, ceramic tiles require little maintenance and are easy to clean. With a wide range of patterns now available, they are a stylish as well as practical option. The Victorian Floor Tile range is also made from hard wearing ceramic and any pattern can be created with the range of colours and shapes available.

Most quality ceramic tiles are suitable for use with underfloor heating, though it’s best to check your individual product. Many people are cautious about specifying ceramic floor tiles in case they prove to be cold but installing underfloor heating can be an environmentally friendly and cost effective way of ensuring your space is warm and cosy year round.

Whether you want to create a plain scheme or inject some vibrant and striking decoration, anything is possible with ceramic tiles. Effortlessly stylish, durable and easy to clean they could be perfect for creating the look you’re after.
