  1. Heritage Hallways – Create a timeless welcome with geometric, Victorian Floor Tiles

Heritage Hallways – Create a timeless welcome with geometric, Victorian Floor Tiles The hallway is the first room you and your guests see when entering your home, so it’s worth investing in the design to make a great first impression. This room can sometimes be overlooked as one of the less frequently used rooms in the home. But opting for hard-wearing yet beautiful geometric floor tiles is a great way to add character as well as practicality. Victorian Floor tiles are renowned for decorating the floors of period properties. From simple chequerboard pathways to detailed porches and entryways, this style of geometric tiling has never gone out of style. Our Victorian Floor tile patterns are made up of individual pieces such as squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons in many sizes and colours. This allows for the creation of lots of pattern options like the classic octagon-dot and more complex layouts, that incorporate a number of pieces. It also helps for those working with older properties where walls and floors may be a little uneven, the small, individual tiles allow for greater flexibility on installation and can be cut to fit tricky spaces. Our Victorian Floor Tile collection is produced using similar production techniques to their original counterparts, which adds to their authentic charm and means they will last for generations to come. To create something truly unique, explore our range of decorative drop in tiles to really set off the look. If you have a dark hallway, it might be worth leaning into a more atmospheric style with dark walls and a contrasting floor. A really important part of selecting your Victorian Floor Tiles is taking some time to look and feel samples. You can create your own mood-boards, play around with shapes and colourways and start to think about which pattern you will go for. Choose from a variety of colours including traditional Buff and Red, classic Black and White, contemporary greys and even pastel tones. These colours are designed to work together and complement each other in order to create a range of pattern options. Whatever your taste, Victorian Floor Tiles can act as the foundation to build upon. While some designs may be seen as complex and bold, the designs can be paired with a variety of schemes. To really express your style go for bold wallpaper, complementary paint colours and playful accessories and create a gorgeous, eclectic space as pictured above. Or, if you prefer neutral interiors, pare back a bold pattern with light walls and fresh lighting. …So if you’re thinking of installing Victorian Floor tiles in your home or just want to find out more about our iconic range, take a look at our brochure and find your nearest retailer here Read more...

Each face showcases more of the pattern, offering a varied abundance of tropical leaves. Inspired by gorgeous botanical gardens and the summer palms found in Devon’s local areas of outstanding beauty, Paradis Mere was a natural choice for our Tile of the Year 2023.Paradis Mere has been designed and developed in our Design Studio in Devon and is manufactured in Exeter by our skilled and passionate production team. Using some of the most authentic manufacturing processes and glaze recipes, this tile is truly unique. Each tile is hand-crafted by skilled artisans using the longstanding screen printing method which, together with its reactive inks, means each kiln produces a different effect, so no two tiles are the same.‘We really love the unpredictable, rustic nature of reactive print. After spending time visiting local botanical gardens, we saw this project as the perfect opportunity to combine them both together to create Botanique Paradis! 3. Our top contemporary-style tile picks

Our top contemporary-style tile picks Contemporary styles work in kitchens, bathrooms, and well, every room in the home! A modern design style can be created with tiles in many ways, in a variety of formats, textures, finishes, and colours. We’ve got plenty of options for contemporary style-tiles, from stone and wood-effect to large-format glass and metallic finishes. Here’s a closer look at some of our top picks…   Kitchens In recent years, modern kitchens have consisted of sleek, streamlined cabinetry with minimalism playing a vital role and a similar approach can be adopted with tiles. Our collections host a number of contemporary-style tiles that not only provide the perfect modern finish but are also brilliant because they work in both small and large kitchens. When we say contemporary-style tiles we’re typically referring to large-format. Larger sizes are wonderfully versatile for a variety of settings and fewer grout lines make for a more even, seamless finish and can help a space to appear bigger than it is – especially in smaller spaces. Large-format tiles work beautifully in larger kitchens too and again create a seamless expanse of space, particularly on floors.     For walls take a look at our Glassworks collection, the reflective iridescent options pair beautifully with large-format tiles from our Tileworks collection. For smaller kitchens, glass tiles are great for bouncing light around the room to again give the impression of more space. Even muted tones of white can help create this feel.   For larger spaces think about incorporating a feature wall or focal point, this is a great way to add impact and style. We love our Copper Leaf glass tiles for this effect!       Bathrooms Contemporary-style bathrooms are a popular choice, the minimalistic modern look is stylish, practical and lends itself to a tranquil, spa-style feel. Our Tileworks collection offers a wide range of large-format options in muted, natural finishes and styles. Wood-effect tiles are a great choice for bathrooms, they look beautiful on walls and floors and create a really modern, fresh look.   Stone-effect tiles are also stunning in bathrooms, we love Amelia a lightly detailed tile with gorgeous veins in a number of shades and finishes! Glass tiles are great for bathrooms too as not only are they practical, but they also offer an eye-catching design statement to an interior scheme. To create a contemporary style with a bit more edge, why not opt for a dark and moody feel? Our Antique Mirror tiles are perfect for creating this look.   Hallways You may not initially associate tiles in the hallway but they are wonderfully durable and a great choice for floors. Take a look at how these Pietra Lombarda floor tiles create a chic and calming entranceway.  Concrete-effect tiles also naturally lend themselves to a more contemporary feel, pictured below is Celaya in white and grey, used on walls and floors for a modern yet homely effect. 4. Designed in Devon – A Q&A with our New Products and Design Manager Jane Addis

Designed in Devon – A Q&A with our New Products and Design Manager Jane Addis We’re proud to design and manufacture many of our tile ranges at our factory in Exeter, Devon and over the years we’ve created a variety of exclusive collections; from our classic Winchester ranges to the large format prints in Living.   Our story is unique and we’re incredibly fortunate to have a talented team of passionate designers and craftspeople who create tile patterns and glazes that you’ll adore for years to come.  We managed to catch up with our New Products and Design Manager, Jane Addis, earlier this year to provide you with some insight into the life of a tile designer and to showcase how our gorgeous tile collections are created.   Q. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into ceramics, as well as your role at Original Style? A. I’ve always been happiest with a pen or paint-brush in my hand and after studying textile design at university I decided to fulfil a lifelong dream to live in Spain and to learn Spanish. This took me to a fabulous region of Spain - Andalusia and in particular Seville, where I learned Spanish part-time and made flamenco dresses. On my daily walks to work, I loved looking at the various tiles that adorned the shop fronts often hand painted and heavily influenced by Islamic geometric prints. On my return to Devon, inspired by what I’d seen I hunted out local tile manufacturers and landed my first design job! Eight years later, I joined Original Style as a designer (I fell in love with their Winchester range). I have worked at Original Style for six years now I love being a part of an industry that is challenging, exciting, trend-led and UK based. I’m lucky that my role is quite diverse and includes putting together product ranges for UK house-builders as well as designing and developing ranges for the majority of our product portfolios. Q. Where do you find inspiration for tile designs? A. The ceramic industry is much more trend-led than it was when I started my career over 10 years ago. Trips to national and international shows and exhibitions are one of the ways that I keep ahead of the trends to ensure what is developed and ultimately launched is the right product at the right time. Many of the interior trends that influence what consumers buy originate on the catwalk and are gently filtered down to other industries including wallpaper, textiles and ceramics. How I then interpret these trends completely depends on the product range and target audience. For example the ‘tropical’ trend that has been so very popular for a number of years inspired our range called Eden - a gorgeous selection of botanical inspired large format tiles. This range was developed and then launched at exactly the right time and continues to be our best-selling collection within our Living Brochure. We also visit national trust properties, museums, design shows as well as taking lots of pictures whilst we are on holiday! A designer’s eye is always open for inspiration.  Q. How long does it take to develop a new tile collection? From conception to manufacturing, to reach the market? A. This can depend on how that product is being made. For example a design that is going to be screen printed requires quite a lot of set up work with a team of people, Digitally printed product can be quicker depending on the level of complexity of the design. With all projects we also have the rule that things don’t always go to plan with ceramics! Working with a natural based product and beautiful handmade glazes all add to the possibility of not always getting what you anticipate! Q. If you had to pick a favourite tile design what would it be? A. That’s hard as we have so many gorgeous products! But, I love the Nano range in our Living collection - its super simple, easy to live with but gives a real urban design edge to any room. I also love our Artisan range - simplistic, beautiful colours, creating a timeless heritage - these tiles will stand any test of time.        Q. Which tile range did you enjoy designing the most? A. The Living range was a joy to design as it was one of the first ranges we developed on our new state of the art digital printer and it’s been a huge success for us. It was great to experiment with a new way of producing tiles and we had lots of fun photographing the new designs in our on-site photographic studio. It’s amazing that I’m able to be part of the whole lifecycle of a products’ development, including seeing the tiles in customer project photos shared on Social Media Q. How does it make you feel when you see pictures of the tiles you've designed in people’s homes? A. It brings me so much joy! I also love to see how people use our tiles, how they are styled and how much pleasure they bring the end user. Q. What challenges do you face when bringing a tile design to life? A. One of the main challenges is making it exciting as well as possible to create in our factory. Our Exeter based production site is unique with a combination of state of the art technology and beautiful antiquated machines that are very loved. It’s important as a designer to be aware of the boundaries our machinery might have as well as trying to achieve something different. We have a wonderful team that are incredibly passionate about what they do and have a brilliant amount of technical knowledge. Q. What advice would you give to those looking to create fabulous tiled focal points in their home? A. To be bold! As I mentioned earlier ceramic tiles are much more trend-led now and there’s plenty of choice. I think it’s always best to have that focal point in a place that is quite visible. Think behind the bath, behind the cooker, make a feature of that walk-in shower. Tiles can add texture, colour and ultimately create atmosphere within a room Q. What’s the best thing about being a designer and working at Original Style? A. The ability to design products that are exciting, trend-led and to work in UK manufacturing - something I’m proud of every day Read more...
  5. The Path to Perfection

The Path to Perfection Nothing says “welcome to our house” quite like a beautiful, inviting front path. That’s why we were thrilled to work with 2LG Studio on their front garden transformation, which featured products from two of our most cherished collections – Victorian Floor Tiles and Artworks.   A Victorian Floor Tile pathway can completely transform a home, adding kerb appeal and value to a property.  And, with the emergence of the ‘New Heritage’ trend, you don’t have to live in a Victorian or Edwardian home to embrace traditional tiling. Mixing the old with the new and putting a modern twist on a classic is what this trend is all about and what better way to encapsulate on this style than through incorporating Victorian Floor Tiles into a contemporary setting. “How?” you may ask - well, these tiles work beautifully in modern porches, pathways as well as hallways and by opting for a classic colour palette such as monochrome or beige and nudes, these tiles will never look out of place.   Jordan and Russell - the London-based design duo from 2LG Studio – decided on an original approach featuring modern greys for the front path and deep, dark blue Artworks tiles on their porch walls. While remaining inspired by Victorian features, they created a pathway with a cool and modern, almost urban vibe, but kept it true to its origins. They also used our traditional mouldings on the walls, which look fantastic against their gorgeous, playful, pink front door. Through combining modern styling with the traditional, they’ve created a stand-out entrance that turns heads and encourages a smile from passers-by.   2LG’s front garden project showcases that the attractiveness of a property is not based solely on its interior. The surrounding space is equally important - especially when looking to sell. Making a good first impression starts outside, as the front path and entrance are the first things a potential buyer will see. It is also an area that is constantly exposed to guests, neighbours, and…you, the homeowner, on a daily basis – so, why not make the effort to make it look grand?! “We think of the pathway as a visitor’s journey into our world. It starts right then and there, before they enter the house, and we wanted to make that journey enjoyable.” Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, 2LG Studio. “We were looking for a solution which would elevate the property’s heritage and period features, but would also stand the test of time both in terms of durability and looks. Original Style’s heritage collections – Victorian Floor Tiles and wall tiles from the Artworks range – were the perfect answer to our long list of demands, including high quality and being able to create a bespoke design.” No matter whether your property has a small, medium or large approach, there are ways to make the front path and porch stand out. The easiest and most practical option is to use tiles that are not only stunning, but also work well outdoors. If your goal is to recreate a Victorian pattern as a nod to the home’s history, opt for a classic colour combo, using black, buff and red. Original Style’s Victorian Floor Tiles are the real deal – they come in traditional colourways and a variety of patterns, making it possible to achieve any period look and restore the tiled area to its former glory. Pair these with traditional glazes from the Artworks range and you’ll end up with a scheme that’s elegant and timeless. To read more about 2LG Studio's front garden renovation, head to their journal. They’re so versatile and can be used as subtle or as pronounced as you make them. Many of our collections are home to the humble field tile, with wide selections of colour, size and glaze depth. We’ve got plenty of inspirational photography, which shows how you can style field tiles around your home.   Neutral backdrops Scandi interiors are still among the most popular styles for homeowners, with many people lusting after neutral colour schemes to create a calm tranquil feel. 7. Transitioning floors, earthy textures and neutral palettes – a gorgeous design project!

Transitioning floors, earthy textures and neutral palettes – a gorgeous design project! As a company, we receive great satisfaction in seeing our customer’s final project installations. We love to watch visions come to life and we’re continually captivated with how every customer puts their own unique stamp on their interior designs when using our products, and this couldn’t ring truer than with this case study.   Last November, we were fortunate enough to be welcomed into Bridget's, one of our lovely customers, home. Bridget worked closely with her architect and builder (Tim Williamson HFA and Graham Hay NJW) to create a truly gorgeous house, based in Original Style’s hometown of Exeter. Bridget's home oozed sophistication and elegance from the moment we walked onto the driveway – ‘let alone the front door! An interior style which reflects classic modern with a touch of minimalism has been successfully integrated and her home is simply stunning. The entire property displays clean lines and what’s worth noticing is Bridget’s full utilisation and attention to detail with the use of our tiles. For the purpose of creating a continuous flow, she’s used them as a transitioning tool from one space into another; as demonstrated below with our Arbo wood-effect tiles. Bridget has very cleverly positioned these tiles to mimic a fluid walkway from the ensuite bathroom into the bedroom – creating two completely separate spaces even though no doors are present. These Arbo tiles then continue through the bedroom into the hallway, again adding to the uninterrupted synergy throughout her home. From a practicality perspective, our Arbo tiles are available in a slip-resistant finish meaning that they’re suitable for use in wet areas. This benefit means that these tiles are perfect for use as a transitioning tool whether you’re looking to integrate continuous movement from a bathroom, as Bridget has done, or even a stylish outdoor space into a living area. The transitioning theme is continuous throughout Bridget’s property. Smaller ensuite bathrooms feature Concretissyma Grigo, a stunning concrete-effect floor tile, which has also been integrated into the skirting; again achieving an almost seamless flow and fully utilising the beauty of these tiles. The colours present throughout Bridget’s property are charmingly neutral with subtle earthy and industrial textures such as wood and concrete. This colour palette is also embraced within the stunning walk-in shower which features Montblanc in White. As shown below, this space portrays a modern minimalist style with the transparency of the glass screen and contemporary shower fitting.    The other end of the shower displays our Pearl Brickbond mosaics, which provides a gorgeous finish and perfectly complements the surrounding light grey and white tones. The attention to detail throughout Bridget’s home is extemporary and it’s the little finer touches which have really made all the difference to the overall look and feel throughout the property. The end result is stunning and we’re very pleased to have been able to share this project with you Read more...

Large format, textures, and contemporary finishes; Tileworks has been extended Looking for that perfect tile? You really don’t need to look any further. We’ve recently welcomed exciting additions to our contemporary Tileworks collection to reflect exciting trends in interior design. The updated collection comprises a multitude of size formats, innovative textures and a wide range of finishes, colours and effects – suitable for every taste, location and setting. What a dream!   To introduce the new arrivals, we’ve comprised the following list to showcase some of our firm favourites. So, go and grab a cuppa, sit back and prepare to be inspired. When it comes to tiles, recent trends suggest that size does in fact matter. Our new steel range is big, bold and beautiful and is an exciting introduction to the Tileworks metal effect range.  It’s large format measuring in at 1200 x 600mm, makes for a dramatic statement. Alongside its ethereal textures and rich colour variations comprising Concept, Black and the stunning Midnight Blue, Steel will add intense dimension to any space. These porcelain wall tiles recreate gorgeous colours and detail of worn and rusted metal, making them the perfect addition to industrial décor.   The large format theme is continued in the expanded stone effect collection with Nero Venato, a glamorous black marble-effect tile. With Black continuing to be a key theme in contemporary interior design, Nero Venato is most definitely a step in the right direction for those looking to make an impact through the embrace of dark and moody interiors. Whilst hitting one key trend, why not incorporate another? This tile is absolutely breath-taking when paired with a gorgeous pattern floor tile, as shown in the above image with our Grande Lewtrenchard Grey on Chalk from our Odyssey collection.   As the popularity of wood-effect tiles continues to rise, we’ve introduced another show stopper to our range. Lignum offers greater versatility with more colourways to choose from and its high-performance slip-resistant finish means it’s also suitable for outdoor use and wet room floors. If you’re looking to achieve a tranquil and natural atmosphere, wood-effect tiles are the way to go.   The texture of a tile has the ability to completely change the overall look and feel of a room, which is why we’re proud to offer a selection of our products in both matt and polished finishes. Amelia is now available in ‘White Polished’ as well as in a new size format, allowing greater versatility to this stunning tile. And, when accompanied by Toronto from the Tileworks concrete-effect range, (which has also received a luxurious polished porcelain finish!), the completed look offers textured detailing for a contemporary, timeless feel.   Talking of textures, Maison Blanc is another addition which shouldn’t be overlooked. The woven fabric effect exudes style and its soft blue and cream tones are simply divine – pastel perfection Read more...
