Designer's Notes

We are very much part of an industry that is governed by fashion and trends that we see on the catwalks usually extend to our homes too. As part of a new series, our in-house Designer and all round trends and style expert, Jenny Wasson, will share her insight into what’s hot, what’s coming and what she loves most at the moment…

Spring 2014

This Spring I have noted an emphasis on natural materials, such as bamboo or wood effects, becoming increasingly popular in the world of tiles, but also wallpaper too. Craft based and handmade products are emerging as a strong trend, particularly those with a strong earthy, artisan vibe such as ceramics.

Textures in fabrics, fashion and ceramics are soft, ethereal and unobtrusive and are often combined with a neutral colour, resulting in a soothing effect.

Colour trends

Dominant hues are still largely monochrome with hints of blue, grey, soft blush pinks and grassy greens. A two tone effect works well with these colours, and grey is increasingly used as a holding colour accented with splashes of yellow, orange or turquoise. Our Odyssey collection shows this trend, with lively patterns in combinations of yellow and grey, blue and grey, monochrome and many more.

Medieval hints and heraldry have come to the fore too, with exposed wood and rugged natural stone adding a hint of drama to interiors.

Inspiration strikes

To form our unique ranges I look to historical buildings for pattern and colour as well as the high street for inspiring ideas that I can translate into a beautiful tile. Sometimes art exhibitions and looking to nature can stir a good idea.

It’s about thinking out of the box and taking a risk to see how a pattern or colour can be translated into a stunning glaze. I never stop looking!
